DIR FLOORTIME APPROACH

Floortime was created by child psychiatrists Stanley Greenspan, M.D. and Serena Wieder, PhD in the 1980s. It is based on the Developmental Individual-difference Relationship-based model (DIR).

Floortime is a relationship-based therapy for both child and adults with autism. It is called Floortime because the supporting adult (SA) gets down on the floor with the individual to play and interact with them at their level, during motivating activities. The supporting adult enters the person’s activity and follows their lead. 

Floortime aims to help the individual reach six key milestones that contribute to emotional and intellectual growth: 

● Self-regulation and interest in the world 

● Intimacy, or engagement in relationships 

● Two-way communication 

● Complex communication 

● Emotional ideas 

● Emotional thinking
